How Weight Conversion Works

All units convert through a common base — the kilogram (kg). The input is multiplied by its factor to get kilograms, then divided by the target unit's factor. Formula: result = value × (fromFactor / toFactor).

Indian Gold Weight System

India's traditional weight system is still the standard at jewellery shops across the country:

  • Tola (तोला): 1 tola = 11.6638 grams. This is the most common unit for gold pricing in India. When you hear "gold per tola," this is the unit.
  • Masha (माशा): 1 masha = 0.97198 grams. There are 12 masha in 1 tola. Used for smaller gold items like earrings and nose pins.
  • Ratti (रत्ती): 1 ratti = 0.12150 grams. There are 8 ratti in 1 masha. Traditionally the weight of a gunja seed, used for gemstone weight.

Relationship: 1 Tola = 12 Masha = 96 Ratti ≈ 11.66 grams
