How Electricity Bills are Calculated
Electricity bills in India follow a slab-based tariff system. The per-unit rate increases as consumption rises. Your total bill includes energy charges, fixed charges, and electricity duty.
Energy Charges = Sum of (units in slab × slab rate)
Total Bill = Energy Charges + Fixed Charges + Electricity Duty (5%)
Avg Rate = Total Bill ÷ Units Consumed
Understanding the Slab System
Each state electricity board defines rate slabs. Lower consumption attracts lower per-unit rates. As you consume more units, higher slabs with higher rates apply incrementally. This progressive pricing encourages energy conservation.

Frequently Asked Questions
How is the electricity bill calculated?
Electricity bills use a slab system — different rates apply to different consumption ranges. For example, the first 100 units may cost ₹3/unit, the next 100 at ₹5/unit, and so on. Fixed charges and taxes are added separately.
